World Cup Theme and Jimmy Armfield Quiz Add Extra Excitement to Annual Memorial Event
Blackpool FC Community Trust hosted its annual Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy Tournament at Stanley Park, bringing together primary school pupils from across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast for another fantastic celebration of football, teamwork and sportsmanship.
The tournament honours the life and legacy of Blackpool FC legend Sir Jimmy Armfield, inspiring young players to embody the values he embodied throughout his career: enjoying the game, showing respect, working hard, and learning to win and lose with dignity.
This year’s event had a special World Cup theme, with schools taking part in a Jimmy Armfield World Cup Quiz throughout the day, testing their knowledge of Sir Jimmy’s remarkable career with Blackpool FC and England. The celebrations were made even more memorable by the presence of the World Cup, allowing pupils to have their picture taken with the iconic trophy!

The football throughout the day was brilliant, especially in the heat of the day, with schools competing in group matches before progressing to the knockout stages of both the Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy and Plate competitions. Across every pitch, players displayed outstanding skill, determination, and teamwork, creating a great environment from start to finish.
The Trophy semi-finals produced two thrilling encounters. St Nicholas CofE Primary School edged past Westcliff Primary School 2-1 to book their place in the final, while Stanley Primary School came through a dramatic 3-2 victory over Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Primary School.
The final proved to be a fitting climax to the tournament. After an evenly contested match, Stanley and St Nicholas could not be separated, with the destination of the Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy decided by a penalty shootout. Stanley held their nerve from the spot to emerge victorious and lift the trophy, bringing the St Nicholas winning streak to an end.

The Plate competition also delivered plenty of excitement. Anchorsholme Primary Academy secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Boundary Primary School in the first semi-final, while Moor Park Primary School defeated Holy Family Catholic Primary School 3-0 to reach the final. Anchorsholme continued their impressive form in the final, defeating Moor Park 1-0 to be crowned Plate champions.
Every pupil involved represented their school superbly throughout the day, embracing the values that Sir Jimmy Armfield championed throughout his life. Respect, resilience, teamwork and enjoyment were evident in every match, making the tournament another fitting tribute to one of Blackpool FC’s greatest ever figures.
Simon Smith, Primary PE Manager at Blackpool FC Community Trust, said:
“It was another brilliant Jimmy Armfield Memorial Tournament and fantastic to see so many children enjoying football in the right spirit. The standard of football throughout the day was outstanding, but just as importantly the players showed excellent respect, teamwork and sportsmanship.
“The World Cup theme, Jimmy Armfield Quiz and World Cup all helped make the day even more memorable for the children. Congratulations to Stanley Primary School on winning this year’s Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy and to Anchorsholme Primary Academy for lifting the plate. Every school involved should be incredibly proud of how they represented themselves throughout the day.”
