St Nicholas CofE Primary Make It Four Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy Wins in a Row!

Premier League Trophy Visit Adds Extra Excitement to Another Outstanding Jimmy Armfield Memorial Tournament

On 7th July 2025, Blackpool FC Community Trust hosted its annual Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy Tournament at Stanley Park, bringing together primary school pupils from across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast for a fantastic celebration of football, teamwork and sportsmanship.

The tournament honours the life and legacy of Blackpool FC legend Sir Jimmy Armfield, encouraging young players to demonstrate the values he embodied throughout his career, enjoying the game, showing respect, working hard and learning how to win and lose with dignity.

This year’s event was made even more special by a visit from the Premier League Trophy, giving pupils a unique opportunity to see one of football’s most iconic trophies up close. The visit created a real buzz throughout the day and provided a memorable experience for all of the players attending.

The football itself was of an incredibly high standard, with schools competing across a series of group matches before progressing into the knockout stages of both the Trophy and Plate competitions. Throughout the morning, players showcased excellent skill, determination and sportsmanship, creating an exciting atmosphere across the pitches at Stanley Park.

After a series of competitive group games, the Trophy semi-finals saw Stanley Primary School take on Moor Park Primary School, while Armfield Academy faced defending champions St Nicholas CofE Primary School. Both Stanley and St Nicholas progressed to the final after impressive performances.

The final saw St Nicholas continue their remarkable tournament record, defeating Stanley Primary School 2-0 to retain the Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy. The victory means St Nicholas has now won the tournament for an incredible fourth consecutive year, cementing their place as one of the competition’s most successful schools.

The Plate competition also produced some excellent football. Following competitive knockout fixtures, Our Lady of Assumption Reds and St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School reached the final. Our Lady Reds delivered an outstanding performance to secure a 5-0 victory and lift the Plate trophy.

All pupils involved represented their schools superbly throughout the day, displaying fantastic attitudes, respect for opponents and a genuine love of the game. The tournament once again proved to be a fitting tribute to Sir Jimmy Armfield’s legacy and the positive values he championed throughout his life.

Simon Smith, Primary PE Manager at Blackpool FC Community Trust, said

“It was another brilliant Jimmy Armfield Memorial Tournament and fantastic to see so many young people enjoying football in the right spirit. The standard of football throughout the day was excellent, but even more importantly the players demonstrated great respect, teamwork and sportsmanship.

“Having the Premier League Trophy with us made the day even more special and created some unforgettable memories for the children. Congratulations to St Nicholas on winning the trophy for a fourth consecutive year, and to Our Lady Reds for their success in the Plate competition. Every school involved should be incredibly proud of their players.”
