Norbreck Primary Academy Triumphs in EFL Utilita Kids Cup Regional Finals

On Monday, 17th March, Norbreck Primary Academy proudly represented Blackpool FC at the EFL Utilita Kids Cup Regional Finals in Wigan. Competing against 11 other clubs, they fought for the chance to play in the final at Wembley Stadium.

The tournament featured 12 teams split into two groups, with the top four advancing to the knockout stage. The format was intense, with fast-paced 10-minute matches played back-to-back, testing the endurance and resilience of all players.

Group Stage Performance

Blackpool FC’s campaign began against Lincoln City in a tightly contested 0-0 draw. Despite dominating possession and controlling the game, Lincoln proved difficult to break down. With nerves running high, earning a point in the opening fixture was a positive start.

After a short break, Blackpool faced Barnsley. The initial nerves faded as confidence grew, and the team began to display some excellent football. Following sustained pressure, the ball fell to Mason, who struck it hard and low into the bottom corner, securing a 1-0 victory—their first win of the tournament!

The third match saw Blackpool take on Stockport County in a thrilling encounter. Both sides played outstanding football, creating and defending with intensity. A late, brilliant save from Ellis, tipping a long-range shot over the bar, ensured another clean sheet as the match ended 0-0.

Next up was Shrewsbury Town, the strongest opponent yet. Their well-organised side created numerous chances, but Blackpool defended superbly, nullifying threats and standing firm. The hard-fought match concluded in another 0-0 draw—another point gained through sheer determination.

The final group match against Rotherham United was a chance to finish strong. Blackpool played exceptional football, building from the back and transitioning through midfield to create multiple scoring opportunities. The pressure paid off with two well-taken goals, sealing an emphatic 2-0 victory. Topping the group with nine points was a huge achievement!

Knockout Stage

Quarter-Final: Blackpool 1-0 Bolton Wanderers
With Wembley now just three games away, tension was high. A cagey affair saw few chances until the final three minutes when Mason controlled the ball, took an early shot, and slotted home the winner. With composed defending in the closing moments, Blackpool booked their place in the semi-finals!

Semi-Final: Blackpool 0-0 Burton Albion (3-1 on penalties)
Burton Albion had dominated their group, winning all five matches, making them a tough opponent. Both teams fought hard, creating chances at either end, but neither could break through. The match went to penalties.

Jake stepped up first for Blackpool and scored. Burton responded, making it 1-1. Fletcher then slotted home to regain the lead. The pressure mounted as Ellis produced a fantastic save, diving to his right to deny Burton’s second attempt. With the score at 2-1, Mason had the chance to seal the victory. He stepped up, remained composed, and fired the ball into the bottom right corner—Blackpool were through to the final!

Final: Blackpool 0-0 Wigan Athletic (3-2 on penalties)
One win away from Wembley, and the nerves were at their highest. Both teams started cautiously, unwilling to take risks. The first five minutes were tense, with few clear-cut chances. As the game progressed, both sides threatened, but neither goalkeeper was truly tested. Another goalless draw meant a second penalty shootout for Blackpool.

Wigan scored their first penalty to go 1-0 up. Jake responded coolly to level the score at 1-1. Wigan scored again to make it 2-1 before Fletcher confidently struck his penalty into the bottom left corner to equalise. Wigan’s final taker stepped up and missed the target, giving Blackpool a golden opportunity. Mason, with nerves of steel, slotted home the winning penalty, sparking celebrations—Blackpool were heading to Wembley!
