IR 24/25: Meet Niamh

At the start of Year 4, Niamh was bright and hard-working but quite shy. She enjoyed PE, but rarely spoke up or showed her full potential in front of the class. One of our PE Officers, Rob, noticed this and started giving her opportunities to take the lead, demonstrating skills to her friends, leading warm-ups, and helping her classmates.

Over time, Niamh’s confidence grew. She started earning weekly certificates for showing the Premier League Primary Stars values (Connected, Fair, Ambitious, Inspiring) and became a role model for her class. Her confidence in PE also carried over into other lessons, with teachers noticing her speaking up more in discussions.

Her teacher, Mr Brent-Reid, added, “At the beginning of Year 4, Niamh was a reserved young lady who enjoyed PE but didn’t articulate herself. Recently, I’ve seen a more expressive young girl who likes to share what she’s learned from the coaches.”

Niamh said,

“Since I’ve been taking part, I feel more confident speaking during lessons and answering questions. I’ve really enjoyed learning lots of different sports, and it’s helped me understand all the different skills there are in PE. I’ve learned that making mistakes is okay. I used to be scared to get it wrong, but now I know that’s how you learn.”
