After spending 25 years in the US, Laurie faced significant challenges adjusting back to life in the UK. Mobility issues and social isolation made it difficult for him to settle.
Laurie joined NAAFI Break, our weekly social group for veterans. This supportive environment allowed him to rebuild confidence and connect with like-minded individuals. Since engaging with BFCCT’s veterans provision, he has taken part in monthly trips to Chester Zoo and Bury Market, volunteered at charity bucket collections, and joined the Veterans Breakfast Club. Laurie has also received practical support from our staff, including arranging his Veterans Badge, mounting his medals, and linking him with the Veterans Hearing Foundation and Blind Veterans UK.
These opportunities have helped Laurie regain independence, confidence, and a sense of community.
Laurie said,
“Returning to the UK after 25 years was overwhelming, but the support I received, especially from the Community Trust, military veterans, and my family, helped me feel like I belonged again.”
Ian, our Armed Forces Engagement Officer, added,
“Laurie’s engagement with our armed forces provision has been exceptional. Don’t suffer in silence, I said, make new friends, make a fresh start. With the help from BFCCT, he has done exactly that.”
