IR 24/25: Meet Dave

Dave, an ex-HM Forces veteran and amputee living with PTSD, spent years keeping to himself. Trusting others, socialising, and taking part in sport were all challenges, and before joining our Active Minds group, he described himself as a “hermit” with “poor social skills.”

At his first Active Minds session, with his son and a friend, he immediately felt welcomed. The friendliness and openness of the group helped him feel at ease, talk about his disability, and start getting back into physical activity and team-based activities.

As he continued attending, Dave regained his confidence and social skills. He improved his fitness, took on leadership roles, and completed Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Advocacy courses.

One of his proudest moments was captaining his team at Bloomfield Road, leading them to victory and earning man of the match, a true reflection of his personal growth.

Dave said, “Without Active Minds and BFCCT, I wouldn’t be sitting here sharing this. I wouldn’t have the confidence to do this. Active Minds has given me a safe outlet to talk, a supportive network of friends, and the courage to share my story.”
