Campaign To Name Local School After Blackpool FC Legend

Members of the Blackpool community, in favour of naming a South Shore school after Blackpool FC legend Jimmy Armfield are kindly asked to sign this survey

The school, on the site of the old Arnold School in South Shore, is due to open in 2018 and the initial proposal is to name it The Avenue Academy. However, former Mayor Robert Wynne has been leading a campaign to recognise Armfield’s contribution to the town and community by naming the school ‘The Armfield Academy’.

Armfield, the only living Freeman of the Borough of Blackpool, was a distinguished pupil of the former school and has worked tirelessly in education, welfare and for various charitable causes. He is President for Trinity Hospice and Age UK, Blackpool, an Altogether Now ambassador for mental health and wellbeing, and Chairman of the Lancashire Partnership against Crime.

Capped 43 times for England during his playing career, Armfield is Blackpool Football Club’s record appearance holder who has a statue and a stand in his name at Bloomfield Road. Jimmy continues to live in South Shore and remains an inspirational figure for people in the town.
