Blackpool FC Community Trust Students Living the American Dream
Two Blackpool FC Community Trusts Football Studies students have secured dream scholarships to study and play football in the USA. Goalkeeper Geoff Wylie and Midfielder Nick Horsley have been completing a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport at Blackpool FC Community Trust over the past two years and have achieved excellent academic grades while also training and competing in the Football league Trust National Futsal League.
Both students will leave Blackpool FC Community Trust with Distinction Merit Merit (DMM) in their BTEC, which is above their minimum target grade. Both Nick and Geoff had to attend several trials held at ST Georges Park and submitted games, their skills and talent were of such a high standard that they were both quickly contacted by a number of large universities keen to secure their services for the next three years.
Geoff Wylie has had a number of scholarship offers and looks set to accept an offer from Illinois University, where as Nick Horsley has had an offer to study at the University of Oklahoma.
Geoff said “the time I’ve spent studying at Blackpool FC Community Trust has helped me to not only improve as a player, but it has also helped me to exceed all expectations with regards my college work, we get great support from the teachers and coaches on the course, and they have helped me to secure this amazing opportunity.”
Nick said “I can’t wait to go to America, it is going to be awesome, I’m nervous about moving so far away from home but the experience will change my life and I’m very excited. Playing futsal on the course has helped me to develop as a footballer and it was one of the things that has attributed to the positive feedback I have received from a number of universities.’
Geoff and Nick are not the only ones progressing on their academic journey with twelve of their classmates continuing their studies with Blackpool FC Community Trust. They will be studying a Foundation Degree in Community Football Coaching and Development in association with the University of South Wales. The Foundation Degree allows students to study at Blackpool FC Community Trust while also gaining their FA Level 2 Coaching Badge as well as the FA Youth Module Award 1 and 2.
