Breast Cancer Creative Workshop with Durose Studios

Working with Durose Studios, on Tuesday 20th May, we invited ladies to a creative workshop in our North Stand Community Hub at Blackpool FC to discuss early signs and symptoms of Breast Cancer.

It was a lovely event where 10 ladies from different backgrounds attended.   For a couple, English was their second language, so having an activity to get involved in also slowed the pace of the conversation and allowed for more understanding between everyone.

During the session, we had thought-provoking discussions about lived experiences and also touched on why people don’t attend screenings or act on any concerns.

One of our participants said,

“This was a chilled opportunity to sit and talk about different experiences surrounding Breast Cancer.  I loved the fact that we got to do something fun whilst exploring a topic that can be seen as quite negative.  It was really interesting to hear about a lady’s experience of living with Breast Cancer and how she spotted the signs.  It’s encouraged me to be more mindful when checking myself.”

Lauren Cholmondeley, Community Living Support Manager at Blackpool FC Community Trust said,

“Working with other organisations is so important when it comes to engaging members of the community and offering advice and support.  It was lovely to welcome Iz from Durose Studios who delivered the creative workshop and have the support of Alex from Healthwatch Blackpool who strengthened the advice and information given.  By bringing people together from different backgrounds it encouraged new conversations around the topic and hopefully all the ladies left feeling more informed with regards to their health.”

Everyone left with a leaflet on earlier signs and symptoms of Breast Cancer, an invite to attend another focus group to discuss the topics further with Health Watch Blackpool and of course the fabulous ‘Boobie Pots’ they had all made.
