Blackpool FC Community Trust’s NCS programme proved to be a massive success with Blackpool and Fylde College’s BTEC Public Services and BTEC Business classes.
Blackpool FC Community Trust run the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme which consists of a residential and social action project including both planning and delivery.
The Public Services group made their way to Kepplewray in the Lakes whilst the Business class were in Scotland as part of their residentials.
Both groups took part in a wide range of activities whilst being on residential including rock climbing, ghyll scrambling, archery, canoeing and cave walking.
Following the three day residential, both classes then took part in the next phase of NCS – planning of social action project. This is where they get to know about the community and what goes on inside of it. The young people also had to choose a charity to raise funds for them. Following the planning of the social action project came the delivery of their social action project.
Social Inclusion Officer Dave Marsland praised the efforts from everyone involved at Blackpool and Fylde College throughout NCS. Dave said, “Throughout the 3 phases of the NCS course, the young people have challenged themselves by going out of their comfort zone on the residential, they have also gained inspiration from each other and their leaders. The course promotes increased independence at this stage of their lives where they are making the transition into adulthood. The young people also gained first aid skills from St John Ambulance and took part in a Wasted Lives car safety course.”
Dave added, “By improving their confidence and communication skills through the social mix, the young people were able to take on board a greater community responsibility by planning and engaging in social action projects. The two charities supported in these recent NCS waves were Women’s Aid and Not Forgotten, where money and awareness was raised.”
