National School Sport Week 2022

Did you know this week is National School Sport Week?

Organised by Youth Sports Trust, the theme of 2022 is to highlight how there is a place in sport for every child.  Alongside this, Blackpool FC Community Trust are proud to celebrate five years of delivering PL Primary Stars to local school pupils across Blackpool, ensuring physical activity is accessible to all.

What is Premier League Primary Stars?

The programme aims to support primary school teachers to improve their knowledge, confidence and delivery of national curriculum PE lessons as well as increase the attainment levels of pupils in Maths and English. We are committed to developing the PE curriculum and school staff within primary schools to ensure that pupils receive the highest quality of Physical Education that is available to them.

Blackpool FC Community Trust PL Primary Stars team also organise extra-curricular provisions such as breakfast clubs, lunchtime activities and after-school clubs. These are in place to boost pupils’ confidence and motivation toward sporting activities.

Free Health and well-being programme available to all year four pupils in Blackpool

Fit2Go is a six-week programme that aims to encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle, take part in regular physical activity and join in with local sports clubs and community programmes which will ultimately improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Fit2Go is currently being delivered to every Year 4 student across Blackpool schools. During Fit2Go, young people learn about how physical activity and having a healthy lifestyle can produce several benefits to their overall health.

After completion of the programme, we organise for each school to come down to Blackpool FC stadium and take part in our Fit2Go Festival which includes several fitness and sporting activities for all the Year 4’s to enjoy.

One young girl who took part in the festival this year said: “I’ve started to eat healthier and have more fruit in my packed lunch, and I’ve started playing football after school, I never used to do that.”

Football Competitions

Every year, we host several football competitions for primary school pupils to take part in. The three main competitions we hold are:

EFL Kids Cup – This is the longest-running football competition we host, and it is for Year 5 and 6 pupils. All Blackpool primary schools are invited, and the winners represent Blackpool in the regional heats to compete for a chance to play in the finals at Wembley.

Premier League Primary Stars Under 11’s Girls Tournament – The PL Primary Stars under 11 national girls football tournament is a competition for all year 5 and 6 girls in Blackpool. The winners represent Blackpool in the regional heats to compete for a chance to play in the finals held at a stadium of a Premier League club.

Jimmy Armfield Memorial Cup – Introduced in 2019 to honour arguably Blackpool’s most famous footballer, Jimmy Armfield, the competition aims to give year 3 and 4 pupils an opportunity to play football and learn about Jimmy Armfield’s outstanding career.
