On Wednesday 26th January Blackpool FC Community Trust held the EFL Kids Cup Final between Norbreck Primary Academy and St Nicholas C of E Primary School at Stanley Park.
The EFL Trust Kids Cup is an invitation event, open to all schools in the Blackpool area, to play in a competitive six a side football tournament against other Blackpool schools. For the first time in two years, children were able to get back to some normality and test their football abilities against other schools.
Both schools battled their way through the competitive group stages before progressing into the knockout rounds of the tournament in October 2021. Initially, 99 children from 13 local schools attended the Blackpool EFL Kids Cup, it was a great display of local football talent, and 91 goals were scored on the day.
The final was an incredibly competitive and tense game which saw Norbreck Primary Academy come out on top with a 6-4 win, despite a great effort St Nicholas C of E Primary School to push back throughout the entire game. The game began with an exciting start as Norbreck raced in to a 1-0 lead after only 2 minutes of the game, almost immediately St Nicholas hit back 2 minutes later to make it 1-1. Norbreck ended the half on top with a 3-1 lead after a couple of great goals. We were straight back into the action in the second half as St Nicks quickly levelled the score to 3-3, this brought excitement and suspence to the crowd. Norbreck raced ahead again scoring 3 more goals in quick succession, without reply from St Nicholas to make the score 6-3. In the final few minutes St Nicholas showed courage and resilience and never stopped. They managed to get another goal but simply ran out of time. Both teams represented their schools perfectly and can be extremely proud of their efforts throughout the whole tournament.
A huge congratulations to Norbreck Primary Academy who now go on to represent Blackpool in the EFL Regional Finals, which are due to take place at Sheffield in March this year.
