Blackpool FC Community Trust recently delivered its annual EFL Girls Cup at Stanley Park.
The EFL Girls Cup is a six-a-side competition for U13 girls that culminates in a grand final prior to the Checkatrade Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium.
The road to the finals begins when each of the 72 EFL clubs organise a local competition for all schools wishing to take part. Each winning school from the local competition then represents their club in the North or South Area Finals in a bid to reach the Regional Finals. The two teams who are victorious in the North and South Regional Finals proceed to play at the Grand Final at Wembley in March 2019. Over 6,000 girls are involved in the competition each year.
Baines, St Mary’s and South Shore Academy took part in this year’s tournament.
The competition started with South Shore taking all 3 points against the team from St Mary’s. Next to play was Baines vs St Mary’s. It was a very close game but Baines took the points which resulted in them playing South Shore in the final.
The final game of the evening was Baines v South Shore. Both teams struck early with great goals. The game continued with an end to end battle until South Shore pinched a last minute winner.
Well done to all teams that took part and to South Shore for reaching the regional rounds.
