Blackpool FC Community Trust’s Junior Amputees made history this weekend after they competed in the first ever Junior League Cup hosted by England Amputee Football Association (EAFA).
Amputee Football is a game recognised worldwide which offers players with amputations or limb deficiencies an opportunity to play the beautiful game. The sport has over forty countries competing on the international scene such as the WAFF World Cup or EAFF Championships (which England finished 2nd in last year).
Blackpool FC Community Trust’s Junior Amputees took on Manchester City and Everton Amputees and produced two fantastic performances winning both games 2-0.
The Trust’s Inclusion Officer Owen Coyle was delighted with how the Junior Amputees played and was honoured to be a part of the day. Owen said, “It was a huge honour to be part of the first junior amputee specific tournament, not only in the UK or Europe but actually worldwide.”
Owen added, “The players were fantastic with a lot of ability on show which is also good for the longevity of Amputee Football in England. A huge thanks to The England Amputee Football Association for all their hard work and support to make this event happen.”
Jamie Oakey who played for Blackpool FC Community Trust in the Junior League Cup said, “I liked seeing new faces take part in the competition and how much everything has grown. Meeting other amputees has boosted my confidence and also taking part in the first junior tournament has given me experience as I want to play in the adult competition when I turn 16. Thank you to Blackpool FC Community Trust coaches for this opportunity.”
